A former WALT DISNEY FEATURE ANIMATION artist, 2006 RONDO AWARD "ARTIST OF THE YEAR" Frank Dietz has found success as one of the new wave of classic monster illustrators. Inspired by the work of artists like Basil Gogos, Frank Frazetta and Mort Drucker, Frank pays tribute to the movie monster world through oils, charcoal, pastel and pencil. Frank grew up on Long Island, N.Y., and then attended the State University at Oswego, majoring in theatre and art. He starred in a series of now-cult low-budget horror films like ZOMBIE NIGHTMARE, ROCK N' ROLL NIGHTMARE, BLACK ROSES and THE JITTERS. He has also written the screenplays for many independent feature films, including NAKED SOULS, COLD HARVEST, the MAGIC IN THE MIRROR series and the upcoming comedy, THE WOODY. In 1996, Frank joined Disney and contributed to such films as HERCULES, MULAN, TARZAN, FANTASIA 2000, ATLANTIS - THE LOST EMPIRE, TREASURE PLANET and HOME ON THE RANGE. During this period Frank created the SKETCHY THINGS series of classic monster sketchbooks, which became extremely popular with genre fans. This lead to years of commissions for horror and fantasy books, magazines and convention appearances. His work has been featured in MONSTERS FROM THE VAULT, CASTLE OF FRANKENSTEIN, MONSTER BASH, CHILLER THEATRE, SCARLET STREET and many other magazines. He recently created the cover art for HAVOC SWIMS JADED, the new anthology from horror author David J. Schow, and the mystery novel WHO FRAMED BORIS KARLOFF? After graduating from the Ringling school of Art I went into training at Walt Disney animation in Florida. I worked in animation on Roller coaster Rabbit a Roger Rabbit short and from that onto Rescuers Down Under. I was selected to go to Hollywood and study in the animator development program with the last of nine old men and many animators from the early days at Disney. This was a dream come true for me. I went onto Beauty and the Beast after training. I was selected to work on Lumiere the candle. After leaving Disney in 1992 I came back to Tennessee to paint and concentrate on fine art painting and am in four galleries at this time. I am developing painting from the classic horror films from the 20's to the 60's. These are being done in the techniques of the old masters, mainly Rembrandt, and Norman Rockwell. |
